Health Implications of Diabetes In the U.S.
The prevalence and health implications of type 2 diabetes in the United States are shocking:
- Over 19 million people have diagnosed type 2 diabetes and another 6 million individuals have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes
- 79 million have prediabetes
- A typical person with diabetes has the disease 7 to 9 years before diagnosis
- People with diabetes have a 2 - 4 times higher risk of stroke and heart disease
- Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney disease, and amputation
- 50% of newly diagnosed patients already have one or more complications
- 1 in 3 children born today will develop the disease
- Diabetes cost the U.S. economy $174 billion in 2007. Over $116 billion was attributed to avoidable direct and indirect costs of diabetes complications
