Health Implications of Diabetes In the U.S.

The prevalence and health implications of type 2 diabetes in the United States are shocking:

  • Over 19 million people have diagnosed type 2 diabetes and another 6 million individuals have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes
  • 79 million have prediabetes
  • A typical person with diabetes has the disease 7 to 9 years before diagnosis
  • People with diabetes have a 2 - 4 times higher risk of stroke and heart disease
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, kidney disease, and amputation
  • 50% of newly diagnosed patients already have one or more complications
  • 1 in 3 children born today will develop the disease
  • Diabetes cost the U.S. economy $174 billion in 2007. Over $116 billion was attributed to avoidable direct and indirect costs of diabetes complications
